Diana J. Richmond, a founding partner of Richmond Tymchuk Family Law LLP, has been awarded her King’s Counsel designation in Calgary as of 13 May, 2022.
To be awarded King’s Counsel (KC) is one of the highest accolades a lawyer can achieve. It is awarded on the basis of merit as well as community service. Diana has been recognized for her leadership, ability, honesty as well as being respected by her fellow lawyers.
Diana says, "Becoming a KC has always been a professional goal of mine. My father received his KC in 1994 and being able to follow in his footsteps was very special for my family and me. I was with my parents when I got the good news in April, which made it extra sweet. Giving back to the profession that has been so good to me over the years was an easy choice."

More about the King’s Counsel designation
For a lawyer to be eligible to be appointed a King’s Counsel designation they must have been called to the bar for at least 10 years. Appointments are made every 2 years, and are assessed by a screening committee. It’s a rigorous process, and only those who have made a significant contribution to the legal profession and the community will be appointed as KC.
The designation originated from England, where it was first used in 1603 as “King’s Counsel”. They were representatives of the Crown however nowadays it reflects their seniority in court.
Canada led the Commonwealth by being the first country to have a woman appointed as King’s Counsel in 1934, Helen Kinnear.
